Sobre la obra
This graphite and charcoal piece, created in 2018, was developed in a class environment in Birmingham, UK. It is one of four pieces I created over a three-year period, pre-COVID, during an exceptionally challenging time for me and my family.
In this work, I used my fingers to smooth the mediums, feeling an irresistible urge to connect more deeply with my art, even though it sometimes damaged the paper. I have no regrets about this approach. The process took about six months to complete due to my work commitments.
To all the aspiring artists out there: let this be a reminder that drawing and expressing yourself in new ways takes love, commitment, and practice. No matter the obstacles you face, your passion and dedication can create something beautiful and meaningful.
I hope you find inspiration in my journey.

“Articulate your Story”
Once upon a time in the bustling city of Birmingham, there lived a man named Khalid. From a tender age, Khalid harboured a deep fascination for bringing his vivid imagination to life through art. Yet, societal norms whispered doubts in his ear, suggesting that art was a realm reserved for the feminine touch, nudging boys towards more "practical" pursuits.
Despite a flicker of encouragement from a wise teacher, Khalid tucked away his artistic dreams, only to revisit them decades later, in the golden years of his fifties. In 2017, fuelled by a relentless desire to create, Khalid tentatively stepped into the realm of art once more, joining a local arts group.
There, amidst the scent of graphite and the soft rustle of charcoal, Khalid discovered a dormant talent waiting to bloom. With each stroke of his pencil, he felt a sense of liberation, encouraged by the affirmations of friends and family who marvelled at his newfound skill.
Yet, life's inevitable twists and turns forced Khalid to press pause on his artistic journey, if only for a fleeting moment. But in 2021, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Khalid returned with a fierce determination, ready to conquer the art world once and for all.
Galleries became his playground, his canvases a stage for his imagination to dance upon. And as whispers of admiration swirled around his work, Khalid realized that this was more than just a hobby—it was his calling.
With a heart full of ambition and a head brimming with ideas, Khalid vowed to take his artistry to new heights. No longer confined by the boundaries of photorealism, he sought solace in the surreal, diving headfirst into the abstract abyss of his mind.
For Khalid, art was not just about creating pretty pictures—it was a journey of self-discovery, a quest to unlock the mysteries of the soul. And as he ventured forth, he carried with him the belief that art had the power to ignite sparks of joy and inspiration in the hearts of others.
With each stroke, Khalid painted not just a picture, but a story—a story of resilience, passion, and the unwavering pursuit of dreams. And as he embarked on this grand adventure, he knew that the best was yet to come.
