About the work
In recent decades, there has been a growing move towards publication in English-medium journals among multilingual researchers, and a growing demand for materials and courses in skills relevant to publishing in English for Research Publication Purposes (ERPP). However, little is known about the training needs vis-à-vis ERPP of writers for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL) and how teaching resources might best address their needs. The main aim of the ENEIDA survey was to gather information in order to gain a better understanding of the current perceived difficulties and training needs vis-à-vis ERPP of research staff at the five Spanish institutions participating in the ENEIDA project (one research-only institution and four universities in Spain), in the context of a number of potentially influencing factors. In the present document we provide a technical account of the questionnaire that we designed as the main instrument used in the ENEIDA survey of a population of 8794 “Spanish-speaking postdoctoral researchers who have received most of their secondary and pre-doctoral education in Spain and in Spanish”. We then refer to descriptive results obtained from analyzing the information in the ENEIDA database generated after this initial implementation of the survey. We end with a discussion of the design of the questionnaire and the uses being made of the information gathered. The document includes two appendixes: one with a pre-online version of the ENEIDA questionnaire in Spanish (i.e. its original version) and another one with a translation into English for the sake of international readers.
